INTERNATIONAL YOUTH VOLUNTEERS COMING TO SOUTHWARK!
June-August 2010
Global Xchange is an international 6 month youth volunteering programme run in partnership between the British Council and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). A team of 24 volunteers from 6 different countries (Yemen, Netherlands, Morocco, Bosnia, UK and Egypt) aged between 18-24 years are coming to Southwark this summer (June- August 2010) to live in local homes and volunteer on local community projects. They will have spent the previous 3 months in a community in Egypt.

Kings Hospital is overcrowded: patients on trolleys
Patients bussed to Lewisham not Dulwich for Treatment
Patients sent home too early after operations, only to return later as emergency cases
Patients in mixed wards
Elderly, dementia and mentally ill patients in the same wards as seriously ill patients
SAVE OUR LAND
Keep Dulwich Hospital on our land: in an area of high social need for Lambeth and Southwark. The Primary Care Trust is no longer involved in providing services.
NOW the PCT commissions others to provide our Health services, but they are likely to bypass local people and go to PRIVATE health services.
We do not want American-style Private Health Schemes here.
LOCAL PEOPLE NEED A LOCAL HOSPITAL
1. London as a Capital is short of beds;
2. Dulwich is near Kings Acute hospital, and can take the overflow patients;
3. Dulwich can provide Intermediate Care beds;
4. Dulwich can provide beds for ill people whose carers need respite from their work;
5. Dulwich Hospital has good transport links;
6. A skilled workforce for the Hospital lives locally to provide qualified staff.
800 beds in 1970; 90 beds in 2000; 12 beds in 2009; no plans for any beds in the future.

If so, please consider volunteering to become part of Southern Rail's Passenger Panel to give your views. It would be very good to have Southwark rail users on the Panel to give feedback on our parts of the services, so hope some of you volunteer. See below for details.

The role of the panel is a consultative one with opinions of members gathered on our services and changes we might want to make. This could be anything from timetable changes to announcements on trains.
The panel of 1000-plus people complements our existing consultation process with local councils, user groups and other passenger representatives.
In order to tailor Passenger Panel consultations as much as possible, we ask you to provide us with information about you and your typical journey on Southern. We expect consultations to take place no more than once a month and depending on your typical journey and the plans and issues to be discussed, relevant consultations for you may be less frequent than that.
The panel is managed through the Southern website and by email so you must have access to both in order to participate.

The artists and makers will open their studios to the public over the first weekend of December. Amongst others, Arch 191 will be open. Come along and see new works by ceramicist Loraine Rutt and new paintings and drawings by Laura Moreton-Griffiths.

1. On 4th November Southwark Council agreed a cross party motion supporting fully and comprehensively the campaign to Save the South London Line. See details here

2. Meeting with TfL on 24th November - News from the Save the South London Line Campaign (** see at end for campaign members)
Subject: TfL Recognises Need For Central London Links from South London Line stations
At a meeting on 24th November with stakeholder groups in South London, TfL recognised one of the main objectives of campaigners, the need to keep radial services to Central London for current South London Line stations. TfL has proposed a variety of short-listed options for keeping service to Victoria, including diverting the East London Line from Clapham Junction, introducing a Victoria-
Bellingham service and making current Victoria-Dartford services run all day, guaranteeing for Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye all day trains to Victoria. This is in contrast to TfL's earlier assertions that SLL passengers should take ELLX to Clapham Junction and change for Victoria there.
However the Save South London Line Campaign is calling out for the Department for Transport to review all terminating services at London Bridge, based on impact and future demand. Network Rail has acknowledged that keeping the South London Line to London Bridge is possible but would require elaborate signalling or the removal of other services. The Campaign has argued that the cutting of SLL would be a rupture of links and hence impact disproportionately. Negotiations with the DfT over this will continue.
The Campaign group is also looking for a Lawyer with experience in Judicial Review proceedings. Anyone able to help?
