The attached note/flyer was produced after the first meeting of the Southwark Rail Users' Group last week, which discussed Network Rail's draft South London RUS (Rail Utilisation Strategy).

* No direct trains between Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill and London Bridge (currently 2 per hour)
* Direct trains between Peckham Rye, Queens Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey to London Bridge reduced.
* No direct trains between South Bermondsey, Queens Road Peckham and Victoria (currently 2 per hour).

We the undersigned call on Network Rail to:

1) Keep the South London Line service between London Bridge/Victoria as it is today, at minimum.

2) Explore the option of taking the existing service to London Bridge on to Charing Cross, Blackfriars or beyond to alleviate issues with platform availability at London Bridge.

3) Provide assurances that phase 2 of the East London Line extension (linking from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction via Queens Rd, Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill) will mean 4 East London Line trains per hour serving our stations IN ADDITION to the South London Line trains to Victoria and London Bridge, not instead of them. Licensing review: Blues Club - 43 Peckham High Street

A local resident has reported that:

""We have heard that the police have requested a licensing review of Blues (also known as 'Good Times'), a night club, at 43 Peckham High Street. The reason is the history of violence at the club where weapons were taken to the premises and used. Two recorded examples of this being someone having entered via the rear fire exit and discharging a firearm, and on another occasion a stabbing outside the club.

Anyone who has views about this and would like the license to be revoked should write to the Council , saying so by 12 October. All the points above can be quoted as reasons for objecting to the continued license of the premises. Unfortunately as the deadline for representations on it is so soon, David Swaby who is the Licensing Officer taking care of this case said that we can write objecting to the license on Crime and Disorder and Public Safety based on what we know from the Police, and request from him further history on the premises so
that we can send an addendum to the letter after the 12th.

climate change - taking it personally

"Peckham CRAG is part of a growing grassroots movement of people who are "taking climate change personally" and forming CRAGs [carbon rationing action groups], agreeing an annual limit for their own carbon dioxide emissions and taking individual action with others to achieve this and sharing tips and encouragement.
 
Our first meeting, at which we will discuss what our annual target will be and other practicalities, will be on Tuesday 16 October at 6.30pm in Peckham Library. All welcome.
 
We will be meeting every month, mostly on second Tuesdays, in Peckham Library at 6.30pm as follows: 13 November, 11 December and 8 January 2008.

This is a reminder that the next two Nunhead & Peckham Rye Community Council meetings are on:

Wednesday 19th SEPTEMBER 2007: Special Cleaner Greener Safer Community Council meeting. The meeting is at St. Mary Magdalene Primary School, 48 Brayards Road, SE15 3RA, starting at 7pm but with food, drinks, info stalls, networking and a chance to see the school's new sensory garden from 6.30pm.

Wednesday 3rd OCTOBER 2007: Crime & Safety themed community council meeting. The meeting is at Highshore School which is a first time venue for us, and has a beautiful hall which is worth coming along to see. Again, the meeting starts at 7pm but there will be food, drinks, info stalls and networking from 6.30pm.

Please find attached the front pages of the agendas for these meetings, as well as the list of Cleaner Greener Safer (CGS) proposals for this year's CGS scheme to be discussed at the meeting on 19th September.

South London Loop Line services - draft RUS for consultation

Dear local residents & train users

Another train services nugget I have discovered by accident - the Rail Utilisation Strategy for South London trains is out for consultation now for 12 weeks, deadline for comments is 26 October.

This will be discussed at Southwark Council's Transport Consultative Forum on Thursday 11 October 6.30pm at the Town Hall, Peckham Road, SE5.

If that defeats you, and your system can receive a 3MB to 4MB pdf ask me for an email copy. From a very quick glance, it seems that the options affecting services on the South London Loop Line are on pages 8-9, and the way to give comments is on page 201. This document looks as if it will give the information needed to make sense of the hints and comments that float around about cutting the services to Victoria and London Bridge from Peckham Rye and other stations on the Loop Line.

What we need is for some residents to examine this document and let us know what they find of relevance to the services for any or all of the stations at Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, Queens Road and Nunhead.

Can those, who have already responded (many thanks) to my earlier call for volunteers to take an active interest in our local train services, get to work on this, and put 11 October in their diaries so they can make a contribution there? We will also see if it is feasible to arrange a discussion in September for those interested, to share information and ideas about it all.

In the meantime, if you can have a look at the document, please let me know what your comments might be, even if only first thoughts and questions, so that I can circulate them to others who have expressed an interest.

dogs off leads petition

Southwark dog lovers have formed a lobby group called HOWL (Hounds Off lead Welfare Lobby) to persuade Southwark Council to step back from imposing a blanket policy that will condemn all dogs in the borough, regardless of size or temperament, to live the rest of their lives attached to a lead. Virtually nobody in the borough, least of all the people who walk their dogs in the parks every day, had any idea that this was coming over the horizon. The first we knew about it was when new signs popped up all over our parks stating that all dogs had to be kept on leads everywhere, with the exception of a few little 'dog exercise' areas in a handful of parks.
Astonishingly, the Parks Department erected the signs without going through the correct legal process of changing the existing byelaw, which states that 'All Dogs Must Be Kept Under Control' (a very sensible law in our opinion). We discovered that they had been so confident that they would sneak through the change in the law without proper consultation that they went ahead and spent £36,000 on this signage PRIOR to any changes being ratified.
There have been no substantial reasons put forward to justify this universal sentence being imposed upon all dogs and their owners, save the fact that the antisocial individuals who own those rather antisocial dogs sometimes vandalise park property and don't clear up after their animals.We all condemn this, but these are issues which can and should be dealt with using existing legislation.
Why should the law-abiding majority with mild-mannered happy dogs be penalised for the sins of the antisocial few? It's like saying that all humans should be locked up because a few of the species commit GBH. There are antisocial elements in all the different park user groups, so why have the dog owners been singled out for mass punishment?
We believe that any changes in the law regarding dogs on leads should be done on a park by park basis by the local regular users, and not imposed as a blanket policy across the whole borough. We beg the help and support from all people who believe in fair play and common sense.
