Peckham murders public meeting 12 Feb

Please find attached some police information about the recent Peckham murders, and the details of a Public Meeting on Monday 12th February 2007 at 6.30pm in The Learning & Business Centre, Cator St, off Commercial Way, SE15.
This meeting is the place to go to get accurate information, and also to express community solidarity both for the people affected and for our hopes and confidence in the future of Peckham.

Peckham. Gangs; council estates; the odd drive-by shooting. Oh, and Del-Boy – let’s not forget Del-Boy.

And then more recently an award-winning upside-down library, and some very fetching rusty bollards. Regeneration.

Hmmm. If that’s what you think, then you’re awfully out of date. The cognoscenti know better (‘cos by definition that’s what cognoscenti do). Peckham really is Britain’s number one creative hotspot, with artists’ colonies breaking out all over the place, heaving with thesps and musicians, and of course writers.

And it is these latter that this festival is all about – from the authors and poets who live in the area currently, to those who have drawn inspiration from the area in some way over the centuries. Actually, it is about any old literature, so long as it is good. It is a celebration of books and words and Peckham, all rolled into one.

What constitutes a festival? Two shops, four days, eight events. We figure that’s enough already – but these things grow, and we are hoping that some of the aforementioned deeply and importantly talented bods living in the area will organise events under the PLF umbrella.

Watch this space. Get in touch. It’s hardly original, but spread the word.

dogs on leads in Parks

Local residents are organising a petition to reverse the Council's new rules that dogs must be kept on leads in Southwark Parks. See the petition text below. This seems a useful piece of information to circulate. Hope that is OK for the non dog owners on the list.

PETITION TO SOUTHWARK COUNCIL
We, the undersigned, ask the Council to reverse their decision to order dogs to be kept on a lead in almost all Southwark Parks. We ask them to return to the previous position whereby dogs had to be kept under control but not necessarily on a lead.

For more than 30 years dogs have run free, with no serious incidents. Dog walkers and their families have helped to foster a community spirit and keep the parks safe for everyone to use. We are disturbed that there was no consultation with us, the people who use the parks.

TURN OFF ! SWITCH OFF ! UNPLUG !

As we have seen from news just this week, climate change is not a remote global issue but affects us here in SE London as well. See below for a practical way we can show our concern on Saturday 4.30pm to 7.30pm - by switching off and reducing our electricity use. BLACKOUT LONDON 4th November 2006
Starting at Sunset 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm
You are invited to take part in the largest demonstration of People Power that London has ever seen on Saturday 4th November 2006, by turning off all your lights, and switching off all your non-essential electrical equipment at Sunset - 4.30pm.
Climate Change is already compromising the water supply, crops, habitat and livelihoods of millions of people worldwide, and threatens to undermine the Global Economy within a few decades, as well as creating waves of Climate Refugees, and driving countless animals and plants to extinction.
The principal cause of Global Warming is the rising Carbon Dioxide emissions into the atmosphere from the burning of Fossil Fuels, for electricity generation, transport, manufacturing, industry, space heating and air conditioning.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER, THE FOURTH OF NOVEMBER !

For one day in November, we are asking everyone who receives this message to think about what they can turn off, switch off and unplug, to show support.
We want the power demand in the United Kingdom to reduce so much that the newspapers are obliged to report it.
We want the lights to go out in London, so that on the evening of 4th November 2006, the dimming effect will be visible from space.
To protect us from the Enemy of Climate Change, we need a War on Energy Abuse. Just like Britain during World War Two, we need to see a Blackout all over London.

CELEBRATE THE NIGHT OF POWER : TURN OFF ! SWITCH OFF ! UNPLUG !

If you are a security guard for an office block in London, please ask your employers when you should be turning the lights out. If you are a church warden, please check with your church council to see if they agree to switching off the floodlights. If you are working for your local Council, ask if you can help them implement an energy reduction plan to turn off lights, computers and fans at the weekend. If you are at home, switch off your set-top boxes, pull all the chargers out of the wall sockets, turn off lights in any room you are not using, switch off any machine with a digital clock in it, unplug the hi-fi and the TV and the games console, de-frost your freezer, switch off your fridge for a couple of hours. Turn the central heating thermostat down to 16 degrees and put a woolly sweater/jumper on if you're cold.
